Theme: “Hōnen, Shinran, and the Challenges of the World Today”
1. Religious reforms and innovations
2. Pure Land Buddhist Ethics – Foundations and Applications
3. Intra-Buddhist and Interreligious Communication
Since Hōnen and Shinran introduced groundbreaking innovations, their movements may be characterized as Buddhist reform movements. However, religious reforms do not only tackle decadence or abuse, but most of all they try to adjust teaching and/or practice to the changes of their times (taiki seppō). Because the establishment of Jōdo-shū and Jōdo Shinshū now has passed since quite some time, the question has to be considered whether they still meet the requirements of our times and places today.
