Mon – Fri 10 am – 5 pm, Sat 1 – 5 pm (except on holidays)
free of charge, no reservation required

Short-term special closures possible due to events or construction/renovation works. Please note the relevant information.

 

Group visits, even without a guide, must be coordinated in advance with the EKŌ-Haus for groups of ten or more people (please contact kuhl [AT] eko-haus.de). Please note that there is no public toilet in the EKŌ Center.

Mobility

Due to the traditional Japanese construction of the temple and wooden house, a visit with a wheelchair is only possible to a limited extent and after preparation (ramp, carpet).

If you have limited mobility, please register in advance:

In the main building there is a lift and a wheelchair-accessible toilet (basement).

Guided Tours

The EKŌ Center offers, on request, private tours of the garden, temple and Japanese wooden house on a small scale guided by one of the EKŌ Center’s research staff.

 

Time Tue – Fri from 10 am to 5 pm (latest start time: 3 pm, subject to availability, excluding holidays and closing times)
Group size maximum 20 people
Duration 90 minutes
Fee Guided tour in German: €60 plus admission (adults: €5, students: €3) – Guided tour in English: €70 plus admission (adults: €5, students: €3)

In addition, public tours of the EKŌ House take place on selected dates on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m., for which you can register accordingly.

 

Using the Library

Primary sources and secondary literature for scientific research in Japan, China and India from the research areas of history / cultural history, art, literature, philosophy and religion

Collection focus & special collections:

  • Buddhism research, including important collections of sources (Taishō Canon, Tibetan Canon, Pali Canon, Bibliotheca Buddhica, Sacred Books of the East, etc.), some with modern Japanese translations
  • Archive Hans Fischer-Barnicol: Works on intercultural religious studies research from the Institute for Intercultural Research (University of Heidelberg) including an extensive collection of unpublished manuscripts and documents
  • Scientific tools (dictionaries and specialist terminological encyclopedias, biographical and bibliographical reference works) & sources, supplemented by an extensive collection of specialist publications and periodicals
